What Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Sonoma?
When people ask us about the best time of year to visit Sonoma, what they don’t realize is that the answer to that question is the reason we love the area so much to begin with — there’s no bad time to visit Sonoma. With great weather year-round and an endless supply of things to do, anytime is a great time to explore wine country.
That being said, it’s always helpful to learn from the locals when you’re planning a trip, so here’s our seasonal guide to life in Sonoma.
Winter (December - February)
Winter is the off season for Sonoma, but don't let that scare you away — it can be one of the best times of year to visit.
Thanks to the area’s gorgeous climate, you’ll rarely experience harsh winter weather in Sonoma. Temperatures are mild, with highs in the 50s and 60s, and even the chilliest nights aren’t too bad — temperatures tend to stay in the 40s. You may experience some wet weather — it’s rainy season in Sonoma, and there will be plenty of cozy clouds and fog, but overall, Sonoma is a great place to escape the cold of winter.
Crowds are minimal in Sonoma during the winter months, making your visit a breeze. It shouldn’t be difficult to get reservations at any of your favorite spots, and traffic is usually light.
Things to Do in Sonoma in the Winter
The winter months are filled with holidays, and Sonoma is the perfect place to celebrate. During the Christmas season, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into a wine country Hallmark movie, with cozy decorations and inviting celebrations at every turn. Take part in the local festivities and enjoy seasonal wine tastings.
If you want to stay home for the holidays but still like the idea of celebrating in Sonoma during the winter, consider visiting over New Year’s, or plan a romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day.
Aside from the holidays, there is much to explore in Sonoma during the winter months. Take advantage of outdoor hiking while the temperatures are low, go for a drive to see the brilliant mustard fields in bloom, or visit your favorite wineries and tasting rooms while the crowds are low.
Spring (March - May)
Everything begins to come to life again in the spring, and Sonoma is no exception.
The weather begins to lose its chill in the spring, with temperatures trending upwards to the high 60s and 70s during the day. Evenings will still be a bit cool, so be sure to pack lots of layers. It’s still rainy season in Sonoma through April, so be sure to keep that in mind when packing for your trip.
Tourism begins to pick up during the spring months, but it’s still relatively quiet. You shouldn’t have to worry about being overwhelmed by people or having trouble getting into your favorite wineries for a tasting. That being said, most do require a reservation, so prepare in advance to save yourself the hassle!
Things to Do in Sonoma in the Spring
Spring is the season of renewal, and there’s no better way to shake off winter’s chill and step into a new season than with an escape to wine country.
One of our favorite ways to kick off a spring morning in Sonoma is with a trip to one of the many local farmers markets. Sonoma’s fresh produce is nothing short of incredible, and you never know what you’ll find at the market — local artisan goods, crafts, and more. We’re partial to the Friday Morning Farmers’ Market, conveniently located right in town.
If you need a pick-me-up after the long winter, give your skin a little extra TLC at one of Sonoma’s world-class spas. It’s the perfect way to rejuvenate after months of too much time indoors and harsh, dry weather.
Looking for something a little more scenic? The Sonoma countryside is covered with beautiful wildflowers all season long, so enjoy a drive to explore and see the bright colors and brilliant blooms for yourself. While you do, stop by your favorite wineries and tasting rooms on the way! Spring is a great time to take a vineyard tour, as the weather is beautiful and mild.
Summer (June - August)
Who can say no to a summer spent in Sonoma?
Unsurprisingly, summer in Sonoma is quite warm — though perhaps not as hot as you might expect when thinking about a California summer. Temperatures tend to stay in the mid to high 80s, with dips down to the 50s still possible at night. If you love warm weather but don’t want to be excruciatingly hot, Sonoma is a great destination for you. Sonoma boasts the quintessential Mediterranean-like climate — the weather is dry, and you’ll rarely get stuck in a summer rain.
Tourism picks up in the summer months, so plan accordingly. Traffic might be heavy, especially on weekends, and you’ll want to make any reservations well in advance.

Fall (September - November)
The season we all look forward to — fall. There’s simply nothing like harvest season in Sonoma County. In our opinion, it’s worth a yearly visit.
Autumn weather in Sonoma is still quite comfortable. Early September is still reminiscent of the summer months, and temperatures don’t really cool in Sonoma until November — October will still see most days in the high 70s. These gloriously warm, golden days are simply unmatched, and it’s no wonder that it’s the time of year that we all wait for expectantly.
Fall is peak tourism season in Sonoma, as everyone wants to be here for the beauty of harvest. We can't blame them — it's the best time to visit Sonoma Valley and experience what wine country is all about. Keep in mind, this means that fall in Sonoma can be pretty crowded. You'll want to account for travel time when making plans and lock your reservations in as early as possible.
Things to Do in Sonoma in the Fall
Wine reigns supreme throughout the year in Sonoma, but autumn transforms this viticultural paradise into something truly magical. As the harvest season unfolds, visitors are treated to the mesmerizing spectacle of the grape harvest — a dance of precision and tradition that no Northern California sojourn should forgo. A vineyard tour during this golden season offers an intimate glimpse into the artistry of winemaking at its most crucial moment.
The fall months usher in a plethora of exclusive events at Sonoma’s prestigious wineries. Discerning visitors should monitor their favorite estates' calendars, as autumn brings an array of extraordinary experiences — from intimate tastings to sophisticated farm-to-table celebrations that showcase the bounty of the season. Each event promises a unique window into Sonoma's rich wine culture.
While the vines begin to change colors, Sonoma's magnificent coastline beckons with surprising warmth, particularly during the lingering summer days of September and October. Here, sun-drenched days and ocean mist create an ideal setting for coastal exploration and seaside rest & relaxation.
